I’m Not Nice, Thanks!

September 1, 2017

My close friends know it. If you want to see the disgust in my face, just tell me, “you are such a nice girl.” I don’t appreciate, what you probably mean as a compliment. Before this world did not move on from all the expectations towards those called “nice girl”, I would prefer to be seen as a nasty witch. This world is terrible to nice girls. Often patriarchal, manipulative, sexist. You know, everything is fine, until you do something, not matching expectations, related to your gender, age and appearance.

Expectations

I’m pretty young, I have curly hair and, sometimes, a wide smile. I love chic and elegant fashion. Those are enough reasons to arouse totally wrong assumptions about my personality, in the narrow-minded people.

As a result, I, more than often, experience people, surprisingly raising their eyebrows. They are surprised that my favourite movie is not Dirty Dancing. They are shocked, finding that I can get very angry, disagree, oppose and I curse, I am sarcastic and can’t stand any form of pressure, manipulation or patriarchal behaviour.

They are very surprised, because they thought I’m a nice girl. Well, I’m not and I have no intention to be. I’m polite, even kind, until the moment someone does give me a reason to be different. Then, I don’t hesitate a second to change into the nasty witch.

I don’t care about all those wrong assumptions anymore. I’m enjoying that surprised look, even consternation in people’s eyes. I’m not here, to fulfill someone’s assumptions. What about you?

I wrote the text above totally spontaneous and then I started to think about photos, matching to the topic. I didn’t have to think for long. These photos we took about two months ago in the Library and Learning Centre at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, were clear choice. I admire her work for a long time and felt some special connection to her and her architecture. Zaha Hadid represents the woman of the future, to me.

Women of the future are all the women, refusing to live according to the society expectations. A woman of the future finds it strange, when someone asks her about the marriage or family plans. She only understands the open questions like “what are your plans, dreams or aspirations?”

When I decided I want to use these photos for the article, I started to look for more information about Zaha Hadid. I discovered many of her opinions related to the topic I decided to open in my blog, too. She was not a nice woman and she didn’t try to be. She was like every “woman of the future” herself and the whole world will enjoy the results of that, hopefully, in the coming centuries.

Daniela I understand where your coming from. I live with three women and I spent about six years working for Canada’s most popular women’s magazine Chatelaine where only a third of the staff were men. I see you see you as a strong women who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to do what she needs to get there. Just keep doing what your doing and the rest of the world will fall into place.

Thank you David! Wow, I didn’t know you were working for that magazine. You are a really strong and open minded man. I live with one man like that and nothing is better! So I think your three women are lucky. Both, men and women use to have prejudices toward other people, but it’s definitely possible to ignore that and stay true to ourselves.

I don’t think I’ve ever related to a post this much! I totally understand where you are coming from and I experience this kind of treatment on an every-day basis (almost). It can make you feel less empowered. Love the strength you are showing in this post xx
