The Art of Nicety

March 23, 2016

What makes a great outfit? For me, as a style blogger, it’s one of those things I pay quite a lot of attention to. While I was thinking about it, I came to the conclusion, that the right way of choosing pieces to make the look much better, can be applied on many other aspects of our lives, as well.

I came to this idea, when I was thinking about this yellow skirt. It caught my attention immediately after I found it,
attracted me to go in the shop and, in the following five minutes, I was its happy owner. It was easy, because I was one hundred percent sure I wanted it. Same with that bag. I also had a luck, because the prices of both were reasonable.

Only later I realized, that I had bought few things earlier, that were not that exciting for me. Only because they seemed to be OK, discounted and I thought they could work well, if I combined them with something interesting.

Truly, I never feel so happy in such kind of clothes and almost never wear them. That’s why I decided to skip such purchases for good. I saved money instead, maybe for less clothes, but the kind I would absolutely love. Like was this dress I bought some time ago, and it made me feel ready for the royal visit. 🙂

Even without many studies proving it, we are all aware of the impact our clothes have on our psyche. They can make us feel great and confident, but also cause the exact opposite. So why to compromise more than is really necessary?

There is a myth, that we can make something simple look great with the nice accessories. Actually, it’s true, but only in case those pieces of clothes are beautiful. Because simple doesn’t mean ordinary. Just have a closer look at the outfits of some famous fashion influencers like Olivia Palermo or Chriselle Lim or many others. Sometimes they combine really simple pieces, but when you observe them carefully, there is always an interesting detail about their basics.

In other words, boring white shirt looking like a small town clerk’s uniform, with necklace, will still remain boring. I really love the outfits, consisting of blue jeans and white shirt or black T-shirt. But only on condition, that shirt has some not-so-common details, structure or material that feels and looks really good, jeans are very well fitted and shoes have an amazing shape, same like the bag. Adding statement necklace or scarf can give the look a bit of drama, special mood, spice it up, but will never save an outfit, consisting of no great pieces.

It’s very much like the food. I love spaghetti with olive oil, garlic and parmesan. So simple and so perfect in the same time. Well, only if all ingredients are in high quality and right amount. I’m sure you got me at this point.

More and more, I favor quality over quantity in most areas of my life, but undoubtedly there is still enough space to be more precise. Mostly it’s not even about spending more money, it’s about patience and commitment to look for things that meet our needs and desires. It’s about searching for the best we can have, regarding to our current situation, possibilities and budget. However, almost always it is possible to have or do something better. We can apply the same approach, when we choose movies we watch, places to visit, people to hangout, relationships to maintain. We need to cultivate the art of nicety.

So, what we should feel, when we decide for specific clothes, activities, books, conversations, people, food, apartments etc.? We need to feel the real joy, excitement, interest. It should also make us feel like our better selves. Then the choice is right for us and we move towards our best version. Ordinary and average things still will be there in our life, but only to help us recognize those joyful and interesting ones.

It’s as if that skirt was meant to be yours! I’ve definitely scaled back on my clothing purchases since blogging because I think it helps you realise which pieces you would really love wearing.
